Against All Odds, Couple With Down Syndrome Celebrates 24-Years Wedding Anniversary

These days, it seems much more difficult to attain a happy marriage, and we see and hear about divorces of people all around us.

People still believe that people with Down’s Syndrome are not able to take care of themselves, and that a marriage between two lovers with special needs will be very difficult to maintain.

The marriage of Maryanne and Tommy Pilling was the first one in the United Kingdom. At first, they were greeted with criticism and skepticism, but their love and dedication proved everyone wrong.

They saw each other and then quickly fell in love. They got married in an Essex church two decades ago, and this year they are celebrating their 24nd anniversary as a married couple.

The lovely couple met in 1991 and dated for about 18 months when Tommy asked the big question.

Lindi, Maryanne’s sister, remembers that Maryanne dreamed of a big white wedding since she was a little girl, so she eventually had it. Just like in her dreams.

After they got married, Maryanne and Tommy lived independently in their own home. Lindi and her family lived next door, so she was always there if the couple needed any assistance.

Maryanne confessed that she was shocked when Tommy proposed. She never expected it. But she is glad he did, since he is her best friend.

Maryanne’s mother remembers that when Tommy wanted to propose, he only had money for a plastic ring from the vending machine. So, she helped him choose and buy a ring for her daughter.

Ms. Newman, Maryanne’s mother, adds that when the couple walks down the street, they always hold hands. She says that they always receive lovely messages and comments from people inspired by their love story.

Ms. Newman manages a Facebook page dedicated to this lovely and inspiring couple. The page has thousands and thousands of followers and people all around the world are constantly writing and congratulating the couple, wishing them even more love and happiness.

Lindi believes that Maryanne and Tommy can provide hope to people with Down’s Syndrome, as they can fall in love and live their happily ever after too.

After all these years together, the couple still has the same advice, be honest with each other, listen to each other and talk to each other. As much as possible.
